Welcome to day 38 of our 40 day devotional of praise and testimony!
Doug and Becky Little
Isaiah 41:10 “Fear thou not for I am with thee; be not dismayed for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
It happened three and a half years ago after a 12 year vigilance of yearly checkups at the eye doctor to keep track of a “freckle” in the back of Becky’s eye. The comment had always been the same from the doctor, “Looks good; make an appointment for next year.” But, this time the doctor called the next day and said he wanted Becky to go to Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, an eye oncology facility, because he saw a change. We made the trip to Wills the following Monday, and after ultrasounds and dozens of pictures, it was confirmed, melanoma. No one is ever quite prepared to hear that they have cancer, especially in this instance with the eye. Fortunately, the cancer was caught early and was very small in size. Treatment would require radiation and laser, and loss of vision was a sure thing. Also at this time, Doug’s dad was on his deathbed in Ohio and not expected to live for very long. The doctors at Wills wanted to do the treatment on Thursday, which would mean a four day stay in the hospital in Philadelphia. The decision had to be made before we left. What should we do? We had been praying for God’s wisdom and leading right along but were not quite prepared to make such quick decisions. How long did Doug’s dad have? Should we take a chance that there would be enough time? We decided to go ahead and do the treatment on Thursday. We got the sad news on Tuesday that Doug’s dad had gone home to be with the Lord early that morning. God worked everything out and allowed Doug to get to Ohio for his dad’s funeral while Becky’s parents came to be with her during the hospital stay. We don’t always know the Lord’s purpose or intent of the trials He brings our way, but it definitely drew us closer to Him and made us realize that He is in control. By His grace and through the many prayers of our church family, the radiation and laser treatments have thus far been successful.
