Paint & Pictures

With the first sign of color in the new building (yes there is painting going on!) I thought it would be a good time to post a few pictures of the building project. Ceiling grids were also being installed today in the offices. Enjoy some pictures from the last 2 days! We Will Give Ourselves To Prayer

Prayer is a spiritual discipline that can easily be neglected. No one intentionally says, “I really want to pray less.” Yet it happens all the time. The same can be true of a ministry. That is why I am grateful for the leadership of our Senior Pastor. From the get go of the building project last summer Pastor Shirk has repeatedly emphasized the foundational verse from Acts 6 “but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.” Those two, prayer and the Word, have to drive our ministry forward. If we neglect either we are playing church instead of being the church.

At every deacon meeting since last summer, we have ventured out to the new building, stood as group and prayed. Last night our wives joined us for special time of prayer in the new auditorium. All 30 of us prayed one by one. We are seeking to give ourselves to prayer.

It takes initiative and time to pray but we are dead in the water if we don’t. I am grateful for a group of leaders who welcome this discipline and a Senior Pastor who makes it happen. To God be the glory and to God be our prayers.

Friday Frivolity – Super Bowl Commercial Poll

A merry heart does good…

Super Bowl commercials have become a whole subcultural context to the Super Bowl itself. While most are at best forgettable and at worst offensive and vulgar some are quite good (and funny). Here are three of my favorites. I’ve included a poll for you to vote for your favorite of the three. Enjoy!

I Am Second – Testimony of Super Bowl Champion Coach Tony Dungy

I hear there is a football game on T.V. this Sunday night. Something about a World Championship, or Super Bowl, or greatest sporting event of the year, or something.  In the spirit of cultural relevance (tongue firmly planted against the cheek) here is a video testimony from a guy who won the Super Bowl and keeps things in perspective. Tony Dungy coached the Indianpolis Colts to the Super Bowl championship 5 years ago. He is also a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Thanks to Nic Pelton for passing this along!

Home – I Am Second. (You will be taken to a different website)

During the video Mr. Dungy references a photo taken of the team praying after they had just won the Super Bowl. Here is that picture.

“First Impressions” Training Makes A Lasting Impression

“New people visit your church. And that is a big deal!” This is how Mark Waltz introduces his book “Lasting Impressions.” He is absolutely correct. In my way of looking at things there are three welcomes that matter. The first is a welcome that you receive (or do not!) when you go to a church for the first time. The second is a welcome to membership, once you have committed to Christ and a local group of believers. The third is the welcome to heaven. The first welcome can actually play a significant part in the second two. Here at Grace we sincerely believe that.

This past Saturday morning 85 folks from Grace attended a workshop put on by Tina Rosenau (a former member of Grace) who leads a “First Impressions” ministry at Parker Hill Community Church in Clarks Summit, PA. Tina has traveled to several churches around the country receiving extensive training in the important ministry of making a great first impression. Tina shared an overview of the First Impressions ministry at Parker Hill along with several helpful ideas on how we can be more effective in making that first welcome one that will lead to the other two!

In anticipation of the opening of our new 16,000 sq. ft. addition we are praying and preparing for God to send many guests our way. The training Saturday went a long ways towards equipping us to be a better host for our God sent guests!
